Gross Inner Happiness
The ideology of Gross Internal Happiness (FIL) was conceived by the young mind of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck who, after having achieved a modern education in India and the United Kingdom, realized that simple economic success did not necessarily translate into a happy and happy society. As a result, shortly after his coronation in 1974, the young king started to spin the idea of developing a new set of guidelines for governing the country. Slowly these ideas took shape and in 1998 the FIL indicator was created. FIL stands for “Gross Domestic Happiness” (in English: GNH and “Gross National Happiness”) and is defined by the following four objectives: to increase economic growth and development, to preserve and promote cultural heritage, to encourage the sustainable use of environment and establish good governance. While the FIL concept receives a lot of international praise and is a big draw for tourists, potential visitors should be aware that the idea is very incubated, and there is little evidence of FIL within the country.
