These islands have a tropical climate moderated by the trade winds between April and November where the average temperature is around 28 ° C. The rains are irregular, heavy and sudden. Tokelau is in the north of the main hurricane belt, but tropical storms sometimes sweep these strips of land between November and March. By 1846, only three hurricanes had occurred in Tokelau. Then, in February 1990, the waves caused by Hurricane Ofa broke through the atolls, contaminating the fresh water. The residual salt prevented the growth of new plants for months. Hurricanes Val (1992) and Percy (2005) have done further damage.
