Territories and tourist destinations.
Austria is composed of the following nine Länder:
      Burgenland – A flat territory on the border with Hungary, Burgenland has as its main attraction the Neusiedler See, a lake with shallow waters that appears on the list of World Heritage Sites. The capital of the Land is Eisenstadt, a provincial-looking town.
      Carinthia (Kärnten) – The capital of the land is Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. A short distance from the Italian border is Villach, the second largest city in the Land by number of inhabitants. Among the major tourist centers of Carinthia are Hermagor, a short distance from the Nassfeld ski area (Passo di Pramollo), in the Carnic Alps. Heiligenblut, at the foot of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria and the spa center of Bad Kleinkirchheim, which also has slopes.
      Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) – Lower Austria is the Land that surrounds the territory of the capital from all sides. Its capital is Sankt Pölten. Other centers of interest are the villages of the Wachau valley crossed by the Danube and included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
      Salzburg (Salzburg) – Birthplace of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is a city with baroque lines between green and romantic hills that guard the course of the Salzach river. The city is included in the list of World Heritage Sites and is internationally renowned for its festival dedicated to classical music and opera.
      Styria (Steiermark) – The capital of Styria is Graz, a lively and pleasant university city, as well as the second center of the country by number of inhabitants. Other tourist attractions in Styria include the Gesaeuse National Park which extends over the mountain range of the same name in the Enstal Alps and the Mariazell ski resort in the Saiza river valley.
      Tirolo (Tirol) – A purely alpine territory, Tyrol has as its capital Innsbruck in the valley of the Eno river and a few km from the Brenner pass. Among the major ski centers in Tyrol, Seefeld in Tirol and Mayrhofen are both a short distance from the capital, Kitzbühel, home to some Alpine skiing World Cup competitions, as well as tennis tournaments, Sölden in the Ötz valley (Ötztal ) dominated by the Wildspitze (3,772 m asl), the highest mountain in the Eastern Rhaetian Alps, Sankt Anton am Arlberg and Ischgl both close to the border with Switzerland. Among the major natural attractions of Tyrol is the Hohe Tauern National Park which forms a single area with the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park in Italy. . Among the cities of Schwaz, Kufstein on the border with Bavaria and topped by an imposing fortress prospered in the Middle Ages for the extraction of silver and with a well-preserved historical nucleus.
      Upper Austria (Oberösterreich) – Linz, capital of the land with modern and bold lines, is renowned for its cultural life full of events, among which the “Ars Electronica” dedicated to digital arts and new technologies stands out. Steyer is linked to the name of the composer Schubert who stayed there for a long time drawing inspiration for his songs, a reason that earned her the nickname “Romantic city”. Wels, on the site of the ancient “Ovilava”, an important city in Roman times, preserves buildings from the late Middle Ages including a castle where Emperor Maximilian I exhaled his last breath. Hallstatt, a UNESCO heritage site.
      Vienna (Wien) – Among the first destinations of world tourism, the Austrian capital is linked to the glories of the various representatives of the Habsburg dynasty but also to the work of courageous artists who from the late 1800s onwards definitively broke the patterns of the past.
      Vorarlberg – The capital of Vorarlberg is Bregenz on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee). The forest of Bregenz (Bregenzerwald) covers the sides of the valley of the Bregenzer Ache river dotted with villages, several of which appear to have ski facilities. Bezau is its major center.
