Territories and tourist destinations:
Northwest Andes – Includes Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Tucumán, western areas of Salta and Santiago del Estero. On the border with Chile and Bolivia, the territory of the northwest does not lack suggestion although it consists mostly of an arid and dusty plateau. Its low population includes a minority of Indios with picturesque customs as in neighboring Bolivia. Quilme is the most interesting Indian village while Salta and San Miguel de Tucumán are the main cities. The Calchaquies valley and the gorges carved by the rivers in the Talampaya National Park are among the major natural attractions of the northwest. To discover the area it is a must to board the “Tren a las Nubes”, a vintage train running for the sole enjoyment of tourists. It starts from La Salta and terminus in La Polvorilla at an altitude of 4,200 m. revealing breathtaking panoramas to its passengers.
Chaco – Includes Chaco, Formosa, eastern areas of Salta and Santiago del Estero. On the border with Paraguay, the Argentine Chaco is an agricultural region with a more torrid climate than elsewhere.
Cuyo – Includes Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis. Territory hinged on the city of Mendoza, in the center of a wine-growing region dominated by the snow-capped peak of the “cerro Aconcagua” (6962 m asl).
Mesopotamia – Includes Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Misiones. The region between the two rivers. Its main attraction is the Iguazu falls near Puerto Iguazú.

The Pampa region, also includes that of the Argentine Sierra which is an area of hills that limit Pampa to the north, Las Sierras welcome the city of Córdoba, second in the country by population.
Argentine Patagonia – Includes Chubut, Neuquén, Rio Negro, Santa Cruz. In the immense southern region we find San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular holiday resort in the area of the Andean lakes, divided in half with Chile. Still in the Andes but further south is El Calafate, the center that serves as a base for excursions to the National Park Los Glaciares included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Valdés peninsula extends over the Atlantic Ocean, interesting for the varied fauna that it welcomes and which is also on the UNESCO list. In the extreme south of the South American continent is the island of Tierra del Fuego with the port of Ushuaia from where you go on a cruise to the Antarctic lands.
