BG - Bulgaria

When to go:

Bulgaria has a continental climate, with hot summers and very cold winters, especially in the Danubian plain, which is the area with the greatest temperature range and the most abundant rainfall. The Balkan mountains act only as a climatic barrier between the northern and southern part, influenced by the Aegean Sea, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast enjoys a milder climate than the rest of the country, which however has a limited influence on the coastal area and immediately adjacent territory. The subtropical (Mediterranean) mitigating influences are felt only in the low valleys of the Strimone and Marica rivers, while the Mediterranean influence in the part of the eastern Rhodope or even Lower Rhodope mountains is even more attenuated. The Bulgarian high mountains have a decidedly alpine climate (from 900 to 1 000 m asl). In the far north-east of the country there is a steppe influence, generally characterized by strong daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations and low rainfall.

The area with the least rainfall is Dobruja, the northernmost coastal strip.
