Tourist regions of Switzerland:
Western Switzerland – A region on the border with France from Lake Geneva in the south to the canton of Jura in the north.
Lower Bernese – Heart of Bernese traditions.
Bernese Oberland – The majestic Bernese Alps. Along the southern belt of the upper Bernese is the Bernese Oberland, the alpine territory of the Canton of Bern comprising renowned tourist resorts such as Interlaken, Gstaad, Wengen, Mürren and Grindelwald.
Central Switzerland – Cradle of the Swiss confederation. On the shores of Lake Lucerne are Lucerne, Weggis, Vitznau and Brunnen. In the territory of the Canton of Uri are Altdorf, linked to the legend of William Tell is Andermatt, an important ski resort.
Basel and Aargau – Headquarters of the Swiss pharmaceutical industry and starting point for Germany and France.
Zurich Region – The region around the country’s largest city.
Northeast Switzerland – Between the Alps and Lake Constance and home to many scenic dairies. It includes the cantons of St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, Glarus and Appenzell (external and internal).
Canton of Valais – The highest European peaks and the largest glaciers. Besides the capital Sion, the ski resorts of Verbier, Crans-Montana and Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn mountain, should be mentioned.
Canton of Grisons – Officially trilingual, the region is very mountainous, sparsely populated and home to many tourist cities and includes the ancient and minority Romansh language and culture. The capital is Chur (Chur) but the main tourist destinations are Davos, Arosa and Klosters. Sankt Moritz, Pontresina and Silvaplana are in the Engadin
Canton Ticino – Region of Italian culture and language, which includes famous Alpine lakes. Bellinzona is the capital of the canton which also includes the cities of Lugano and Locarno. Another destination for international tourism is Ascona, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Also worth mentioning is the village of Morcote on Lake Lugano.

Swiss Alps
Swiss plateau – between the Swiss Alps and the Jura massif, between Lake Geneva and Constance. The boundaries with the Alpine region are not well defined and generally the territories in the pre-Alps fall within the plateau region.
