Geographical notes:
Montenegro is a mountainous region consisting of high mountains along the borders of southern Serbia and Albania, a segment of the karst located west of the Balkan peninsula and a narrow flat coast of only 4 km. The plain stops north, where the rivers of Lovcen and Orjen flow into the mouths of Kotor. The vast region of the Montenegrin Karst is located at an average altitude of 1,000 m a.s.l., reaching Mount Orjen, the highest massif in the chain, 1,894 m. The lowest point in the Karst region is the valley of the Zeta river located about 500 m above sea level. The mountains of Montenegro are among the most rugged European territories, which rise on average to more than 2,000 m. One of the most famous peaks is the Bobotov Kuk belonging to the Durmitor chain, which reaches a height of 2,522 m. The Montenegrin mountains were subject to profound erosion during the last glacial period.
