Wadlopen near Wilhelmshaven, Germany
The Frisian islands are a tourist destination appreciated above all by the inhabitants of northern Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. They can be reached by boat, but some can also be reached on foot during low tide hours. The islands, in particular low tide conditions, are in fact connected to the coast by a muddy strip of land, the crossing of which is called wadlopen, wattwanderung or vadevandring (respectively in Dutch, German and Danish), which means walking in mud.
In the Netherlands, wadlopers can walk from the coast to Terschelling, Ameland, Engelsmanplaat, Schiermonnikoog, Simonszand and Rottumeroog. Other routes are not recommended, both for the possible danger and not to create disturbance to the ecosystem. In Germany Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Minsener-Oldoog can be reached on foot. In Denmark, Mandø, Fanø and Langli.
The wadlopen is done only with the accompaniment of authorized guides.
